Christmas Family Room Tour

Come with me as I take you on a tour of our family room all decked out for Christmas. This is the room we spend the most time in so it is the room I have concentrated my holiday decor in.

I begin decorating for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. There’s lots of people who decorate much sooner but I just can’t do that. There’s nothing wrong with decorating earlier.

Using traditional reds and greens, I have also tied in a variety of neutral decor pieces as well. I love mixing different tones to create my own style. I use muted tones of red and green. The colors are not bright but more of an olive tone and burgundy than bright red and Kelly green.

This keeps the room very relaxing and not inundated with too many distractions. I think decor should be subtle and add to the ambience. Decor should not be the total focus but it should relate a feeling of peace when you are in the room.

One of the things I love most about decorating for Christmas is all the treasures that I get to display every year. They hold so many precious memories.

Christmas Mantel Decor

Ever since, we remodeled this mantel, it has been my favorite place to start decorating for Christmas. I love laying the garland across it and hanging the stockings. The garland has lights and ornaments attached to it. This makes it an easy decor piece.

The round mirror above the mantel is simple. I like the minimal look of it although it could be dressed up with some greenery.

These stockings have been around a long time. My children are all grown and out on their own now. I thought about replacing them but there’s a lot of sentimental value attached to these stockings.

I like to mix neutral with traditional colors on the mantel. By using the galvanized house along with the white trees and silver deer, I have a lovely mix of farmhouse and traditional.

Christmas Decorated Console Table

We purchased this console table at Kirklands this year. The color and styling fits our family room so well. This washed wood is very complementary to the neutral tones I am using for this vignette.

I love the carved legs on this table. They give the table a lot of character. Even though there isn’t a shelf, I still decorate beneath the table. I stacked a couple of baskets that I have had for years and a lantern with a simple candle.

This is an odd corner to decorate since there are doors on either side. This table fit perfectly. I added two lamps that have smart light bulbs. This way I can schedule the lights to turn on and off at certain times of the day.

How To Style A Console Table

First off , what is a console table? A console table is traditionally placed either behind a sofa or used in an entry way. It’s generally a narrow table with that functions well in a small space.

In my case I used a console table in my family room because it fit the space so well. This little wall has doorways on either side of it, making a traditional cabinet too awkward.

Styling a console table is probably one of the easiest pieces of furniture to decorate. It is long and narrow. Making it the perfect candidate for small decor accents,

What to put on a console table:

Place two lamps on either side of the console table. This makes a great area to light up at night.
Hang either a mirror or a piece of artwork above the table for a focal point.
Use vases, candles or figurines to balance out the table. Use an odd number of objects for visual interest.
Choose either a theme or color to convey a feeling.

I wanted the vignette on this table to reflect a vintage aesthetic. I found the two bell trees and the vase at a local hardware store that also has a home decor section. Small boutiques are wonderful places to shop. You can find unique decor and the prices are really not that much more expensive than the retail chain stores.

The candle jar is another local find. It is a volcano scent by Capri Blue. This scent has a slight citrus smell that’s so clean. The jar is mercury glass which fits in nicely with the rest of the faux aged decor.

The deer is a white washed wood that matches perfectly to the neutral tones on my console table.

You can easily make vignettes when you choose a theme or color. Then build around that idea. For me, color nearly always plays the most important role in my decor settings.

My Christmas Dough Bowl

Dough bowls make a great addition to a coffee table or cabinet. There are a variety of ways to decorate dough bowls.I like to fill them with floral picks and and accent pieces.

Again color plays an important part to keep the dough bowl cohesive in design. I chose muted greens, silver, and frosted greenery to give it a winter vibe.

This dough bowls sits beneath our tv so I have to keep the decor low. Dough bowls are fun to decorate because they can hold many treasures. I especially like to fill it with large ornaments and sprigs of frosted greenery. Adding the mercury glass ornaments give the dough bowl a lot of character.

I have also used these mercury glass ornaments for a Christmas table centerpiece. Mercury glass is pretty and can fit into so many different decor styles.

I added more ornaments this year that adds to the vintage vibe to this dough bowl. The ornament tops are different colors of bronze, aged gold and copper. I love how it all blends together. Don’t be afraid to mix metal colors. It always works out well.

The Santa sign was another local find that fits in perfectly with the vignette.

I love decorating this dough bowl. For my winter vignette, I have decorated it using slightly different accents.

Christmas Coffee Table Vignette

A coffee table tray is a great way to contain decorative items. It is a cohesive way to display some favorite accent pieces. I have some tips for you on how to decorate a coffee table that will hopefully help you to create your own vignette.

I keep this wooden tray on my coffee table year around. The decor is simply changed for the seasons. It is such a versatile piece.

I especially like to use bells in many of my displays. Here I laid a string of aged bells in a concrete container that is embossed with pine trees. I found the container at a little boutique. It’s perfect for adding to the coffee table tray.
