How To Decorate For Christmas On A Budget

You can decorate for Christmas on a tight budget. Decorating for Christmas doesn’t have to overly expensive or time-consuming when you know a few tips. The following ideas will inspire you to get your home ready for Christmas inexpensively and quickly.

Use The Same Decor Each Year

You don’t have to buy all new Christmas decor just to keep up with whatever is trendy. Know what you like. If you like a particular style, go ahead and purchase a piece or two but don’t go overboard. You may tire of the look next season. Stick to your style and it will always be in for your home.

Three candle holders with white trees.

I used these mercury pillar candle holders on my Christmas table centerpiece last year. Since I painted my fireplace mantle in white, I decided to use these candle holders on it this year. Same decor, different place. Love the look, even better love the price.

Fill A Vignette With Large Pieces

Last year Pottery Barn was having a sale on these huge ornaments. I got two for very little money. It was a huge score for me. I just love the aged mercury look of these balls. I took some faux garland that I bought many years ago and filled this wooden tray. Placed the two ornaments on opposite ends on top of the garland and added some berry picks for color. I love red accents. Bells are an inexpensive accessory to add to the tray.

Use everyday pieces that are around your home. They don’t have to be exclusively for Christmas. Such as the tray above.

Holiday Pillows

Pillows and pillow covers are very inexpensive. Even cheaper to sew your own pillow covers using fabrics you may already have around the house. I have a great tutorial that will walk you through how to sew a pillow cover.

You only need a couple to put your room into holiday mode. Use everyday pillows as backdrops to show off the holiday pillows. All the pillows you see below I have sewn over the years. I feel the handmade pillows make my room a little bit more special.

You can also purchase ready made covers just begging for a personal touch such as stenciling or appliqué. See this post on how I created the chalkboard pillow with fabric paint.

Fill Lanterns With Ornaments

Oh, how I just adore lanterns. They are so pretty filled with candles year round. But at Christmas time, I fill my lanterns with Christmas balls. Ornaments are very inexpensive when purchased in those large plastic cylinders. You get the most bang for your buck using Christmas ornaments for more than just hanging on the tree.

I don’t fill the lantern completely full. I like to be able to see inside the lantern.

Little Details Make A Difference

It’s the little details that add charm to your decor. Little figurines, mugs, plates, signs. All just give the eye something new to look at. I love how you can look at a room and be surprised at oh, I didn’t see that before. You know like when you see a movie for the second time, you get more out of it.

The basket shelf hangs on my kitchen dining wall. I love filling it with different items through each season. The ceramic truck I picked up at the Target dollar spot years ago. This year I found this darling tin mug at Hobby Lobby. It fits perfectly with all the red and green and black.

Use Ribbon

Ribbons are very inexpensive. They make the perfect budget friendly decor.

Use ribbon to hang small wreaths from kitchen chairs. Or use ribbon to hang larger wreaths in your windows. Too adorable.

The ribbon doesn’t even have to be Christmas themed. Checked or buffalo plaid ribbon is very in right now. With ribbon so inexpensive this is a trend you can afford to splurge on.

Make bows to hang on your tree or as lantern toppers.

Push lengths of ribbon in between the branches in your Christmas tree to add fullness and color.

DIY Your Christmas Decor

Do you own a Cricut or other cutting machine? If so, it is time to bring it out and start crafting those ornaments and wooden signs. This is a great activity to do with the kids. In this post, I have a tutorial to make simple wooden ornaments to fill your tree or wreath. Just a little paint and a foam brush will get you started.

Sewing a few simple items lend a special touch as well. Such as potholders, mug rugs, table runners and more.

What craft do you enjoy? Add some home made goodness to your decor.

Pick A Theme

I lean mainly towards red and green for Christmas but that doesn’t mean I can’t use white and silver. Or a specific item.

Like bells. Oh. my. So many bells. I have rusty ones and white ones and silver ones. Using a set of three white bells, I set one in each level of a small three tier tray. Again using ornaments as filler, I put a few pinecone ornaments around each bell. This made an impact with color.

So pick a theme whether it be color and item. Stick to this and you can really decorate for Christmas on a budget. Then you won’t  be tempted to splurge when you shouldn’t.
