Use these ten ideas to style a cozy guest bedroom with ease. This bedroom draws inspiration from the cottagecore style. This type of decor features traditional, warm and cozy decorations. It’s welcoming and inviting. Simple yet functional. The perfect styling for a bedroom. Especially a guest bedroom.

Cottagecore evokes an English countryside feeling. Full of florals and rustic vibes. It’s modern farmhouse but with spring colors. This is a style you can build on.

Decorating a guest bedroom was a top priority when we moved into our new home. We wanted a place for our out of town guests to feel at home and welcomed. The main areas of our home are set in neutral colors which I absolutely love. I wanted a different style for the guest bedroom. It needed to be warm and cozy. You can achieve that inviting feeling with a neutral decor. I was ready for something different. Something that embraced pattern and color. A style that was reminiscent of the 1990’s decor. That’s why I landed on cottagecore for this room.

It was such a delight to shop for this bedroom. Being a small space, meant I could make mistakes that weren’t costly. I could go outside my comfort zone and try things that I wouldn’t do in a larger room.

The one thing I realized after decorating our guest bedroom, it’s kind of difficult to make a decorating mistake. Everything flows together, regardless of style. I shopped my house a lot for this room. It has a nice mix of old and new.

Color

Deciding on a color palette for this guest room was easy. Green and blue with touches of beige and gray. Yes, beige as an accent color. You can’t go wrong with a neutral.

Green represents nature which equates harmony. A feeling of renewal. While blue represents a sense of calm and tranquility. Having both in a guest bedroom creates a restful color scheme.

These green nightstands became the focal point of this bedroom. I designed the guest room around these two pieces. Going with a color rather than a traditional brown nightstand gives this room a cozy and warm vibe.

Mixing Patterns

Mixing patterns with florals may seem too busy. In reality, I love the contrast. This makes for a lovely ambience. Advice that may seem to be the opposite of a calming bedroom. But in this instance, it works well together..

I didn’t go too wild in mixing patterns. The bedspread has a beautiful floral with a striking stripe on the opposite side. This adds enough interest without being busy.

The repetition of florals continues in the wall paper above. The floral prints in the bedspread and the wallpaper compliment each other. It’s in the same color family of blue and green.

My advice is to mix those patterns but stay within the same color scheme.

Add Home Crafted Items

My favorite hand crafted item is a pillow. I have a tutorial on how to sew an envelope pillow cover. Place handmade pillows to beds and chairs. This adds an element of warmth to a guest room. Making it yourself means you can mix patterns and colors that reflect your style.

Or how about a needlepoint pillow or counted cross stitch picture? To me, this personalizes a room and makes it extra special.

Handmade quilts thrown over a chair make for a cozy reading nook. Add a lamp with a small table. Perfect for cuddling up with a book or magazine.

Layer The Bed

Placing a white and fluffy duvet on a bed will elevate any bedroom to a feeling of luxury. In this space, I chose to use lightweight quilts instead. This felt warmer and more comforting. There is something about quilts that are reminiscent of gentler times. I wanted that feeling of calm and welcoming. Simplicity.

I layered two different quilts on this bed. The top one is a beautiful floral pattern and the second quilt is a solid neutral gray with matching pillow shams.

I added enough pillows without being overwhelming. You can snuggle into the decorative pillow shams while supported with the bed pillows behind them. A perfect set up for reading a good book.

Mix In A Few Books

Books make great accents as well something to read. I placed a couple of books on one nightstand shelf. They are easy to get to and look pretty. I didn’t add too many because I wanted to leave space for my guests to have room for anything they brought with them.

Board And Batten Wall

An accent wall is the perfect back drop for the bed in this guest room. It is the first thing you see as you enter the space. We decided on a classic board and batten style for the accent wall.

A board and batten wall is an easy DIY. I wanted this wall to showcase the bed. We made the board and batten end a foot above the headboard. We kept the design pretty simple. We used only vertical boards to create rectangles with one long board across the top and bottom. This required minimal cutting.

You could go with squares but I wanted the wallpaper to be the focal point for this wall.

The wood was primed and painted. We used Accessible Beige by Sherwin Williams. The wall spaces between the boards were also painted this color. I left the rest of the walls in the room Alabaster by Sherwin Williams.

This wall is my favorite part of the room.

Peel And Stick Wallpaper

I never thought I would ever hang wallpaper again. I have taken down a lot of wallpaper. It’s not fun at all. Peel and stick is a new breed of wallpaper. It’s simple to put up. No paste. No water required. It works as it says. Simply peel and stick. This was a short section of wall so it went up quickly.

I am delighted with the results. Together with the board and batten, the wallpaper adds a lot of character to this room.

I am actually thinking of using peel and stick wallpaper in another room.

Antique Or Rustic Bed Frame

A metal bed frame is the best example of farmhouse style. This style extends into a cottagecore bedroom. A simple bed that’s accentuated with the linens that adorn it. The focus isn’t so much on the bed frame but what’s layered on it. Although this bed frame isn’t antique, it certainly fits the rustic vibe.

The metal bed frame gives a vintage feel. This sets the stage for layering it with gorgeous linens and quilts. I love the subtle details on the footboard.

Metal bed frames come in many colors. White, distressed white and black are the most popular. This black bed frame makes a subtle statement in this cozy bedroom. It complements the mixture of color and patterns.

Plants Give Life To A Room

Putting a few green foliage stems into vase adds color and life to a room. Whether you want to fill a large vase or a small planter. You can find the perfect size to fit your space.

I do not have a green thumb. Live plants are beautiful but I seem to forget about them. Luckily, there are many artificial plants that look real and feel real. They are easy to care for and can be easily switched out when the mood strikes. Placing faux plants in a bathroom are great accents, too.

I used a small plant with some accessories on one nightstand. A larger vase filled with green stems sits next to the tv on the dresser. Any type of floral stems in a vase makes a big impact.

Baskets Add Texture

I love baskets of all kinds. They are a functional pieces of artwork. They add texture and warmth to a space.

I wrote a couple of posts on using baskets to organize your kitchen and how to organize your home with baskets. You can never have too many baskets. Such great containers to either display or hide your treasures. They are great for corralling towels in a bathroom, too.

Add some baskets to your guest bedroom. Fill them with quilts or books and magazines. This makes the space more cozy by inviting your guests to grab a quilt and a book to curl up with in a comfy chair.

My goal for this room was to create a space where you could relax. Put your feet up without worrying about messing up the decor. A place to unwind and get a good nights sleep. The perfect styling for a cozy guest bedroom.
