This is the caveat. In order to elevate your bathroom into a spa-like experience, you’re going to have to declutter. Then clean. But it will be worth it. Just having a clean space is luxury in and of itself.

I’ll be honest, cleaning the bathroom is my least favorite chore. Once it’s complete, I feel so much better being in a clean space. It’s invigorating.

  • Clear your counter: The first step is to eliminate all the clutter on your bathroom counters.
  • If you are storing items you use on a daily basis on your counter, either find a home for them in a cabinet or put them in pretty containers. This way they aren’t so conspicuous. Plus pretty containers just make me happy to look at them. Other less used items should be stored out of the way. For some organizational ideas, check out this post on how to organize a bathroom.
  • Deep clean: Scrub all the surfaces on your vanity. Wipe down the mirror(s).
  • Then move onto cleaning the tub and or shower. Declutter those areas if necessary.
  • Lastly, scour the toilet and mop the floor.

2. Add Some Greenery

Adding vases of full of floral stems and faux plants was a complete game changer for my bathroom. This one step alone, created a bathroom that became warm and welcoming.

Small vases or pretty containers full of faux greenery is the perfect addition to your space. I added two complementary vases to my bathroom counter and it instantly warmed up the cold surface.

There are many very pretty faux plants that look like real plants. If you don’t have a green thumb, fake plants will work just as well.

3. Soaps And Bubble Bath

Bringing in scents is a big part of the spa experience. You need to use the sense of smell to fully appreciate the calming effect of enjoying a bath.

Whether you choose to use body wash, bar soap or bath salts, look for relaxing scents. Lavender, eucalyptus and citrus will elevate your bath into a serene experience.

Look for pretty apothecary bottles that are already filled with bath products. I can always find such bottles at Home Goods. Or invest in antique bottles and fill with your favorite bubble bath.

Display bath salts and bar soaps in beautiful containers. Don’t leave them in their packaging if it doesn’t fit your theme. Decant them into jars for an aesthetic appeal.

4. Candles

Candles add ambience. Mood lighting for relaxing. Perfect for allowing all the stress of the day to fade away.

There are many candle options. Jar candles are my personal favorite. You can get them with one wick or three wicks or more. Plus they add fragrance. Aromatherapy is popular for a relaxing bath experience. Try to stay with calming scents in this category like the soaps and bath salts.

If you would rather not burn a candle, use an LED battery operated faux candle. Flameless candles have really come a long way in recent years. They come in many types of flickering flames and will glow in different colors. You can use faux candle sticks in groups of three for a pretty display. Pillar candles make a nice addition as well. It all depends on the amount of space you have.

5. Simple Hooks

Using hooks in a bathroom is the easiest way to hang bathrobes and towels. You can place them behind a door or next to a shower. This makes the robe or towel readily available when needed. You can place as many as needed whether it be a single hook or in a group of three.

I have had this monogram hook for ages. It is perfect for a bathroom.

Of course, hooks come in many styles, colors and made of different materials. For a spa bath, I would choose one made with either metal or wood. These would make nice additions to the calming vibe.

6. Fluffy White Robes

Who doesn’t love to step into a fluffy robe after a shower or bath? To me, this is self care at its finest. I would definitely put this on my wish list. I can’t think of a better way to top off your homemade spa treatment.

7. Luxurious Thick White Bath Towels

Likely, you’ ll want to splurge on one item, I suggest making it the fluffiest white bath towels you can find. There’s nothing like stepping out of the shower or tub and wrapping up in a soft luxurious towel.

For a touch of elegance, add an embroidered monogram to your bath towels. I love having a personalized towel to use.

What to look for in a luxury bath towel

  • Fiber – 100% Turkish or Egyptian cotton makes a durable towel that will become softer after each washing. These fibers are fast drying, super absorbent and strong.
  • Weight – Grams per square meter (GSM) are how towels are measured. Look for towels with a minimum of 500 GSM for a thick, absorbent towel.
  • Size – A nice size bath towel is approximately 30 inches by 56 inches. Looking for something larger? Consider a bath sheet which measures approximately 39 inches by 68 inches.

8. Soft And Plush Bath Mats

Place a soft bath mat in front of your tub or shower. Sinking your feet into a plush bath mat after a bath or shower is pure luxury. Adding bath mats to your bathroom softens hard and cold tile flooring.

Not only do they absorb water but they offer style as well. There are many styles and colors to choose from. You don’t have to go with a white bath mat for a spa feeling. I chose beige mats which is a calming color that also adds warmth.

Bath mats don’t have to be expensive. My local discount home store always has a good selection of luxurious mats.

9. Add Calming Neutral Colors

You don’t necessarily need to repaint your walls in a calming color to create a spa-like bathroom. Add neutral color accessories instead. This is an inexpensive way to make your bathroom feel like a spa.

When you think of a spa, you immediately think of white and wood tones. You can also use grays, blues and greens to make a soothing bathroom. By using the same color scheme through out your bathroom, this will create a cohesive spa feeling.
