My Secret To Quick Baking
My secret to quick baking is one single ingredient that will save you time. You can find it in your local grocery store. I only discovered it by mistake.
I have included an easy cocoa powder brownie recipe so you can bake faster, too.
Recently, I picked up what I thought was all purpose flour. It was on sale and I was in a hurry.
I put it in the pantry when I got home and didn’t think another thing about it. Well, a few days later, I opened what I though was all purpose flour and proceeded to fill my flour canister. Then I noticed on the label it was Self-Rising Flour. I never use self-rising flour and if I did I thought it was only good for making biscuits.
Wrong!!! Any recipe that that calls for all purpose flour, salt and baking powder can use self-rising flour. Just omit the salt and baking powder. This is a huge time saver. Since the salt and baking powder are already mixed in, I have found my baked items are lighter. Better mixing than mine.
I have made cakes and brownies using self rising flour . Absolutely delicious! I have included a recipe for brownies that I have made several times. I love brownies. This recipe uses self-rising flour and cocoa powder. Super easy.
How To Make Self-Rising Flour
If you don’t have any self-rising flour, you can make it. In a bowl add:
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
Whisk these together well. Do this for each cup needed.
Quick and Easy Brownies
Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup butter (melted)
- 1 cup self-rising flour
- ⅓ cup cocoa powder (unsweetened)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Beat sugar, eggs, vanilla and melted butter in a large mixing bowl by hand. You don’t need an electric mixer for this batter
- Add self rising flour and cocoa to bowl. Mix well. This is a very thick batter.
- Pour into a greased or use parchment paper lined 8 inch square baking dish. Spread evenly.
- Place in 350°F oven for 25 – 30 minutes or until tested with a toothpick that comes out with a few crumbs on it. You don't want to over bake the brownies.
- Cool. Then cut into squares.
Cutting brownies into neat squares is easy with my method.
See how easy? You can have fresh baked brownies every day. Well maybe not every day. That wouldn’t be good for the waistline .
So next time you’re in the grocery store pick up some self rising flour for quick baking!
Fantastic brownies! And super easy to make!
I am so glad you enjoyed them!
10/10 came out fantastic!!! Had all ingredients at home couldn’t be easier!! I was nervous it would be dry my family likes them gooey so i added 1 tsp of veg oil! Kudos to you on this fantastic recipe will never buy box again!!
Thank you so much, Dana! I am really glad this recipe worked so well. I don’t use boxed brownie mix anymore either.
The brownies were amazing. It work so well with the applesauce ( I have start substituting my eggs for applesauce), it was thick enough where I didn’t have to add a little more flour because of the applesauce. I will be making them again soon.
I love the idea of using applesauce for the eggs. Thank you for the tip! I am so glad you enjoyed the recipe!
I wanted to make something sweet on a rainy day and knew I had self rising flour. I found this recipe and whipped this up in minutes. I added some chopped walnuts to it. They bake up perfectly! Delicious too!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the brownies! Thank you for the lovely comment.
Can I use almond bark instead of cocoa. Don’t have cocoa and no way to get some. Love the applesauce instead of eggs
I don’t think this would work as a substitute for cocoa. Almond bark has many ingredients such as sugar which would alter the taste and possibly the texture of the brownies. I hope you can get some cocoa to make these brownies. They are delicious!
Made the brownies and they turned out fantastic! Super easy and already had the ingredients on hand!
I’m so glad to hear that the brownies turned out so well! My favorite recipes are those that I already have all the ingredients for. Thanks so much for the lovely comment!!!
These brownies were so fun and easy to make but are they supposed to be slightly dry? Don’t get me wrong, they were nice but I was expecting some nice fudgy brownies… I followed all steps of the recipe
No, these should be fudgy. Everyone’s oven is different so maybe bake for less time. Hope this helps.
I bake the brownies 325 degrees for about 23 minutes. After they have cooled I put an icing on the brownies.
I use powdered sugar, 1 stick of butter, cocoa, and coke for consistency. I really do not measure the icing. You can top this with ice cream.
The icing sounds delicious! I’ll have to try that.
