Sweater Storage Using Ikea’s Alex Tower

You can organize your sweaters using Ikea’s Alex tower. This is a great sweater storage piece that can easily fit into a small closet.

I have a lot of sweaters. I wear one nearly every day during the winter and spring months. My office stays cold. Problem was, my sweaters were stored in several places. Some were on a shelf in my closet. Others were in different drawers in my dresser that resides in my bedroom. This made getting dressed in the morning a little difficult. I am not the person who sets out her outfit the night before. Just not going to happen.

I needed sweater storage ideas.

My Closet Sweater Storage Solution

On a recent trip to Ikea, I purchased the Alex tower. Nine drawers of precious space that would fit in my closet. The perfect solution for my sweater storage problem.

Upon opening the box, this is what I was faced with….

A little daunting but Ikea’s instructions are all drawings making assembling a breeze. So an hour later, I had this….

Ready for my sweaters. So excited to get them all into one place.

This unit fit easily into my closet. I set it to a wall utilizing space that was simply sitting empty.

I gathered all my sweaters. Folded and rolled them like I did in Organize Your T-Shirts Tutorial.

The first five drawers in the Alex tower are shallow so I placed three sweaters flat not standing up in each drawer. These are in a single layer so I can see all the sweaters when opening the drawer. There is one shallow drawer where I was able to fit my cardigans rolled up since they are not as bulky.

The last four drawers are deeper so I was able to stand the sweaters so the fold is up. Again, allowing me to see all the sweaters in that drawer without digging. Joy!

The Best Way To Store Sweaters

Folding sweaters is the best way to store them. This keeps them in shape versus hanging them which can actually damage them. Hangers can lead to shoulder bumps if you aren’t using the proper type of hanger. Plus you run the risk of your sweaters stretching and becoming longer due to the weight of hanging them in your closet.

Placing The Sweaters In The Alex Tower

The first shallow drawer filled in a single layer since it isn’t deep enough to stand the sweaters on end.

You could also sort your sweaters into color order since they are all being reorganized any way. I didn’t but I think I will go back and do that.

I own short sleeve and long sleeved sweaters as well as pullovers and cardigans. The drawers could be organized by type of sweater as well as color.

There is space on the drawer cutout where you could label what type or color of sweater is in that particular drawer.

The more effort you place into organizing now the easier it will be to maintain.

Another drawer, all filled.

The first lower deeper drawer filled with sweaters all standing on end. This is a much easier way to find a sweater you want than digging through a dresser drawer.

I still have three drawers to fill.

Three empty drawers slightly opened.

This has made getting ready in the morning so much easier. Plus making putting away my sweaters more enjoyable since they have a dedicated space.

What organizing have you done that has saved you time?
