You can decorate as little or as much as you want. If you only want to decorate one room, that’s okay. Even just putting a couple of pumpkins here and there will give an inviting feeling of autumn.
Do you find fall decorating intimidating? It doesn’t have to be that way. Here’s fifteen easy fall decor ideas to get you started. Use one or two or all. It’s up to you.

1. Decorate With Vases
Decorating with vases is one of the easiest items you can use. You can fill vases with seasonal floral arrangements, sprigs of leaves or just leave it empty. Vases are great accent pieces that can give a lot of visual weight to a table in your living room or your fireplace mantel.

I just love these green tinted glass vases from Target. They come in three sizes but I decided that I liked the large and medium the best. By putting a few fall sprigs in each, I have a beautiful fall look.
2. Switch Out Wall Decor
You probably have pictures hung on your walls. There’s no need to put more nails in your walls. Simply take a picture that is already hung and replace it with a fall one instead. Instant fall decor!

Or lean a fall picture on your fireplace mantel. No nails needed.
3. Layer Your Sofa With Throws Or Quilts
Drape a blanket throw or quilt over your sofa. This is the perfect way to accessorize your couch with very little effort. It also will automatically bring a cozy feeling to your living room.

4. Change Out Your Pillows
Purchase or sew some fall pillow covers. Pillow covers are the better option than purchasing stuffed pillows. It is very easy to change out pillow covers with each season and store them away. They take up much less storage space.
5. Scented Candles
Use scented candles to bring another layer of fall to your space. With their calming aroma, candles are sure to transform your space into a cozy haven. Not to mention the ambience they give when lit. Did I say warm and cozy already?
Do you buy lots of candles? I seem to buy more than I burn which means I need a place to store my candle inventory. Having a dedicated area for your candle collection makes it very easy to see what you have before you head to the store for the next big sale.
6. Add Natural Elements
Fall is a great time to go ahead and bring the outdoors inside. Gather leaves, twigs and acorns from your yard ( or buy them). Then fill various bowls, vases or baskets around your home. This is especially true if you are using mainly neutral fall decor for autumn decorating.

I purchased this dough bowl last year. It is one of my favorite pieces to decorate. This year I filled it with faux sunflowers, pumpkins and lots of foliage. This is all the foliage I had from years past. By putting all of it in, this created a very full piece. Sometimes, you just need to go big.
Check out my post on how to decorate dough bowls and trays for fall.
Don’t forget apples are abundant this time of year. Go ahead and pile some in a bowl or basket and add to a table vignette. Or use a round basket for a fall display on your kitchen island.
7. Use Texture
Burlap pumpkins are an easy texture to mix in with your regular fall decor. Actually anything burlap will give your home an extra boost for a comfy and cozy feeling.

Look for nubby textures for throws and pillows. Faux fur and sherpa will add lots warmth to your fall home decor.
8. Don’t Be Afraid Of Color
Using pops of color throughout in small doses can make a big difference in the mood of your living room or dining room. Here I used lots of oranges in a tray on my sideboard. This gives the sideboard a colorful focal point that I can build around.

9. Decorate With Fall Mugs
Go through your mug collection. Pull out those mugs that are fall related and those that are simply fall inspired. Hang them on a mug tree or place in a tray with some apple cider packets for a beverage bar.
The mug tree or tray doesn’t have to be filled to capacity. It’s okay to leave space.

10. Free Fall Printable Sign
Can there be anything better than free? Print out a free picture and place in a frame for instant fall home decor. This fall printable is my favorite that I made a couple of years ago. I placed it on a burlap covered canvas for texture as well as color. Adding some gingham ribbon was an inexpensive way to add color and interest.

11. Decorative Plates
Using plates is an inexpensive way to add decor without spending a lot of money. Discount stores and home decor stores have the best seasonal plates. Place some plates in a wall basket. Place smaller pumpkins in front for a layered look.
Put a plate in an easel for a table display. This can be your anchor piece. Then build with other decor such as candles, decorative acorns and faux greenery around that.
If you have a tiered plate stand, stack several plates on each tier and top with a small pumpkin like I did last year.
12. Seasonal Tea Towels

Gather your seasonal kitchen towels to add some festive look to your kitchen. Hang them from the oven door handle or the dishwasher door handle. Even just lay one on your kitchen counter. I added one across my bread box just for some whimsy. It is out of the way and makes me smile when I look at it. There are many cute fall tea towels. Go ahead and splurge on this item.
13. Fall Coffee Table Decor

Update your coffee table vignette with seasonal pieces. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. I took my tray that always sits on the coffee table and switched the regular decor for pumpkins and two decorative acorns. The beads and candle stick are pieces that I use all year long but adding the fall elements gives it a totally different look.

14. Repurpose Old Decor
Shop your home for items that you can incorporate into your fall decor. Look for every day pieces that can be repurposed. I have to change my mindset on such stuff. Just because an item has only been used in the kitchen doesn’t mean you can’t use it in the dining room or family room. Change things up.
What if you simply don’t like the color of a decor piece? Paint it! This is one of my favorite ways to give new life to old decor. I like to chalk paint small pieces to give them a new look. For larger pieces, I use spray paint to give it a quick update. Then to give it a chippy appearance, rub sandpaper in a few places. The old color will come through and be beautiful.
I have even stained baskets to bring out a modern feel to an outdated color.
15. Fall Tiered Tray Decor Idea

Tiered trays work beautifully in any room. You can add many small items and it will be so cute. I love them. I have this one on my kitchen counter.
If you don’t already own a tiered tray, I would recommend going with a smaller size. Then there isn’t as much space to fill. But if you are going to use larger items such as coffee mugs in the tiered tray , take that into consideration when purchasing one.
The dollar store is a good place to look for inexpensive filler fall decor.
Pick a theme. For example, a buffalo check theme. Make it cohesive with one or two colors.
Using vase filler such as pumpkins is an inexpensive way to get more for your money.
Place a sign or two and you have a gorgeous fall vignette. So simple but effective.
Decorating Doesn’t Have To Be Expensive
The best way to keep the cost of decorating down is to:
- Use what fall decor you already own.
- Work everyday items into your seasonal displays.
- Only purchase those items that will have an impact to the above.
