Divide And Conquer

I couldn’t decide what I wanted. What would fill a large wall with high ceilings? Then it came to me.

To make the large wall seem more manageable, I decided I needed to divide it up. Divide and conquer became my strategy.

I previously had a console on this wall which was much too small. The wall just swallowed that piece of furniture. It looked out of place. I needed something larger to break up the wall. In our previous home, there weren’t any large walls. Each wall had either a doorway or a window.

This large bookcase was in my entry way, so my husband and I switched the two pieces. Now, the bookcase resides in our living room, visually dividing up the large wall space. This gave me a smaller area to work with. The wall wasn’t a huge challenge at this point. This small move made the wall more manageable.

By moving the large bookcase, it divided up the wall and allowed me to conquer that huge wall.

Adding Large Artwork To Walls

I opted to add three large pictures to this wall. They measure 87 1/2 inches wide by 37 1/2 inches high.

I searched for large artwork for my living room walls that matched the wood color of my bookcase. Happily, the gray frames match perfectly. This brings a cohesive and soothing vibe to this space.

The artwork itself is simple and calming. I didn’t want anything busy or too colorful. A beautiful neutral styling was what I was looking for. Botanical prints are always a good choice when looking for simplicity in a framed picture.

Finding Symmetry In Your Decor

Symmetry is visually appealing. Try to find a balance in your wall decor. What ever you do to one side, repeat it on the other. In this case, the bookcase became the sole object in a group and the pictures a separate grouping. So, I didn’t need to add a second bookcase to balance the wall. It may appear asymmetrical but I believe this decor option works.

It is best to group objects in odd numbers. I chose to do three pictures and one bookcase.

In decor, there are always exceptions. For example, there are only two chairs beneath the pictures. This violates the rule of odds but it is symmetrical.

Scale Your Decor

When working with large areas such as this large living room wall, you need to think big. Small items would just get lost here. Use scale to evaluate the size of your chosen decorations and furniture pieces. You need a correlation to the space and the decorative pieces. They need to feel and look as if they belong there. The decor items should be in the same size range.

The last thing you want is a space that isn’t balanced. It will always feel off.

Don’t be afraid to take furniture from other areas of your home to dress up a different space. I love to change things up and mix things up. Just because a decor item or furniture pieces has always been in one room, doesn’t mean it has to always stay there.

The best thing you can do is what pleases you. These are ideas to get you started. Sometimes, we need an idea of where to start. Hopefully, this gives you some inspiration to decorate your large living room wall.
