Use This Homemade Window Cleaner (For Sparkling Windows)
For the best and easiest way to have sparkling inside windows, use a simple homemade window cleaner spray.
This cleaning solution is far better than any store bought window cleaner. It is non-toxic. Simple to mix. (You probably already own the ingredients.) What makes it even better is this homemade window cleaner spray is CHEAP to make!

The Best Homemade Window Cleaner Solution
I have found that this homemade window cleaner with vinegar works just as well if not better than any store bought brand. I have a bottle of store bought window cleaner that I rarely use. Actually, I have had this bottle for several years. I just don’t like the smell. Or using unknown ingredients around my family.

The best solution I have found to clean windows is a homemade window cleaner spray with vinegar. This recipe contains:
- one part water
- one part white vinegar
- a few drops of dishwashing liquid
Add one part water, one part vinegar and a few drops of dishwashing liquid into a spray bottle. Then shake the ingredients together.
The dishwashing liquid could be any brand. Just use a few drops. The dishwashing liquid helps to break up the dirt. It takes the haziness off the window.
That’s all you need. Super simple. Plain ingredients. Nothing fancy.
You are good to go! Chemical free. And IT WORKS!!!!
I like using a natural window spray cleaner so much better. This is a perfect alternative to commercial spray window cleaners.
How Often Should You Clean Inside Windows
We have had a lot of rain here lately in Tennessee. I think we have had more rainy day than sunny days this spring. So, when the first sunny day came, I couldn’t wait to pull up the blinds and throw open the windows. That was until I noticed how dingy the window looked. And the window tracks looked even worse.
That only meant an indoor window cleaning was in order. Ideally, you should clean windows twice a year. But I think realistically for most of us, once a year is the norm. Spring seems to be when I notice how dirty my windows really are. That’s the only time they get cleaned. Which is fine for me. Your needs may be different.
Now cleaning inside windows is not difficult. It just requires the right tools and a willingness to do the job. The right attitude, you know. Not to mention a lot of elbow grease. Yeah, you have to put some work into this task.

How To Clean Windows Without Streaks
To reduce streaking, I have tried using :
- paper towels
- newspapers
- coffee filters
None of those helped with the streaking.
Use A Microfiber Cloth For The Best Result
A microfiber cloth is the best way to clean windows without streaks.
I use a micro fiber cloth for a lot of general cleaning which I talk about in this post to clean your home quickly.
The microfiber cloth is lint free. I have never had any streaking from using one of these. I have been using these for all my cleaning. They are not that expensive and can be found at nearly every grocery or discount store. Or order online.
How To Take Care Of Your Micro Fiber Cloth
When it gets dirty, just throw it the washing machine with some clothes. Don’t wash these with towels. Towels add fuzz to the microfiber cloth.
Do not add fabric softener either.
Then let it air dry.
How Do You Clean Inside Windows
- Pick a dry cloudy day (the homemade window cleaner won’t dry too fast)
- Mix the homemade window cleaner with vinegar
- Spray the inside of the window
- Use a microfiber cloth to wipe down the window
- Don’t try to clean every window in one day. Space this chore over a few weekends. You don’t want to wear yourself out.
Cleaning The Window Tracks

Cleaning window tracks is my least favorite part of window cleaning. But one of the reasons I even started to clean my windows in the first place. The tracks get so grimy from the weather. Not to mention the bugs. The tracks just get disgusting. I have tried to ignore them but it was too yucky.

I have discovered the easiest way to clean those window tracks is to:
- Vacuum the tracks. I used my cordless vacuum with the crevice tool attached. (Which I adore.) A shop vac would be ideal since you are picking up all sorts of grime and bugs.
- Spray the homemade window cleaner into the tracks.
- Let it sit for a few minutes to do its magic.
- Use an old rag to wipe out the window track. You may need to use an old toothbrush or small foam brush to get into the side crevices.

Window Sills
Don’t forget to wipe down the window sills as well. I found some areas of my window sill that needs some caulking to prevent any water damage. The inside corners of the window sill had deteriorated a bit. So, give your window sills a look over. They may need some attention.
Seeing the results will convince you that you don’t need an expensive product to have sparkling windows.
Grab your homemade window cleaner spray and a microfiber cloth to see the results for yourself. Your inside windows will be sparkling in minutes. Be sure to clean out the window tracks as well. Wipe down the window sills. And you are finished. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done.
Now that I have cleaned the inside windows, maybe my Mister will clean the outside windows.

I am going try this. Thanks Carol and you look cute with your hair in a ponytail
Thanks, Robin!!! It’s my new look! 😀 Let me know how this works for you.
Thanks for sharing! When we bought our forever home last year, I couldn’t wait for Spring to open up all of the windows. There are a TON of them ! My favorite are the big ones that take up half of the walls, all the way around my laundry room/backroom. We have farm land all around us so there is a lot of dust and dirt. I can’t wait to try this out and get my windows clear again!
You will love this cleaner for your windows. Congratulations on your forever home! I bet you have lots of natural light coming into your farmhouse. I love big windows. Thanks for visiting, Shelly!
It’s a really great article, thanks for sharing such informative knowledge with us.
