5 Tips To Decorate Your Home Like A Pro

After coming home from the big box hardware store, we were laden down with new projects for our home. Most of these new projects were actually maintenance stuff. Not the fun stuff like new pillows, or paint ( I like to paint) or new dishes.  Just the mundane. New air filters, a new mini blind to replace the broken one, ferns to hang from our porch. Well the ferns are not mundane. But we do get them every year. It’s a southern tradition.

While installing the mini blinds, I noticed some other items, I would like to replace or possibly paint. However, there are lots of other elements of my home that I am completely satisfied with.

Five Tips To Decorate Your Home Like A Pro

Here are a few tips on how I got to this point. How to decorate your home and be satisfied with the results.

Love Your Style

Love your style. Don’t give in to what trending if you don’t love it. The trend right now it’s all about neutral (gray) and painted wood. Which I like. But. I love the feel and color of natural  wood.

I have always loved brown. When brown was the new black for clothing I was in my element.  In my home, I have dark wood flooring, dark wooden kitchen cabinets,  natural wood baseboards and trim. All set against white walls. I love the contrast. With all the windows in my home, the wood really stands out and makes a statement.

I thought about painting the baseboards, doors and molding around the doors for a brief second. A brief second. It’s not for this house. The dark paneled doors are just too pretty to cover with paint.

Don’t do what is popular just because. That’ll fade. Style what you love.

Use Pillows and Throws

Bring softness to a roomy with pillows and throws. Soft accessories really make a room feel lived in and not just a rest stop.

Texture livens up a room. Use texture in pillows and throws. This will also give your room visual interest.

You want to have a room that invites you in to snuggle up with a good book.

Bring In Natural Elements

To decorate your home, there should always be a natural element such as flowers, shells , twigs, moss or something from the outdoors.

Fresh flowers are ideal but not always feasible. I have found a fresh bouquet of flowers will last two weeks. Plus if you find a bouquet that has some unopened blooms, you can separate those from the other flowers when they are dead extending the life of the bouquet. I have been able to do this and have fresh flowers for 3 weeks. Costco is my favorite place to buy fresh flowers. A decent size bouquet is under 10 dollars.

By bringing in nature you breathe life into that room. This balances a room and makes a statement.

Natural elements give your room a cohesive feel. That your home is indeed your sanctuary.

Choose A Color Palette

Choose a color palette that pleases you. If all white is what you like, great. But don’t be afraid to throw in a pop of color. I personally love red objects. White decor is the perfect backdrop for color.

Perhaps retro is more you. Turquoise and red is very retro theme.

Maybe a beach vibe is more your style. Use the colors of the beach. White, blue and tan.

Decide on your color palette and shop your house for decor pieces in just those colors to decorate a room with.

Color is the perfect way to bring your decor together. The style can be different if all is in the same color palette. Color makes it all goes together.

Use Varying Heights In Displays

When decorating a table, or mantel, remember to vary the height of your objects.  They shouldn’t be all the same height.

It is more interesting as your eyes look at a table top display if all the objects are different sizes. Plus no object is hidden. The different heights allow each object to shine.

You can create height using a stack of books, candle sticks, cake stands, a tiered stand. Stack a bowl on top of an inverted bowel like above. I needed something to give height to the Pyrex vintage charm bowl (Target find).  I put that bowl on top of another bowl that I turned upside down. Perfect.

Shop Your House First

It is fun to bring new decor into your home but it is equally fun to repurpose existing items. There are times when decor becomes uninspired. Before donating it or relinquishing it to the closet, move it to a different space. Just because it’s always been in the family room doesn’t mean it can’t live happily in a bedroom. Play around and you’ll be surprised at what you come up with. Mix and match.

The main idea is to not take your decor too seriously. It is fun to swap it out. Play with different pieces to decorate your home.

Then relax.
