We have lived in our house for 15 years and the old kitchen did not function well. It was a U shape which really only allowed one person to be in it at a time. We were constantly tripping over one another. Plus the refrigerator was located in the walkway from the kitchen to the dining area. Traffic jam! This post contains pictures of the old kitchen. Ready for the new kitchen?
I love traditional kitchens that include stained wood cabinets, granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances. We took off the U shape and it is now an L. With the island installed, we didn’t lose any counter space. The traffic flows so much better now. There is room to move about without running into one another. Biggest joy ever.
The island is two cabinets back to back rather than side by side with a butcher block on top instead of granite. One side holds the trash can and junk drawer. This side has two shelves which I really haven’t decided what to put in it yet. The drawer above hold knives and cooking utensils. I put my Ikea bar on the side to hold dishtowels. I thought I could hang the towels from the hooks since they have loops but the towels are too long. So I fold them over. It’s great to turn from the sink and wipe your hands.
The little counter top beside the stove is perfect for my Keurig. I keep the powdered creamer and sugar in the cabinet above.
I keep sugar and flour in the stainless steel canisters that are corralled in the tray. I use this area for baking. My small appliances are in the bottom corner cabinet for easy access.
This is my favorite feature of the kitchen, my wall of cabinets. The tall cabinet holds my baking pans. Holiday items and seldom used things are kept above. The double tall cabinet is nearly empty. It is really supposed to be a food pantry but I have a pantry closet I use. So I am still debating how I want to use this space. To be honest, after many years of cramming stuff into too small a space, I enjoy opening a cabinet that is empty. Dreaming of what to fill it with. My little luxury.
I like how the corner cabinet is a little taller than the rest of cabinets. I think it is visually pleasing. We also installed can lights around the perimeter of the kitchen. As well as under cabinet lighting. It is awesome to be able to see what you are preparing. We had the electrician ad 6 outlets so I could have many appliances plugged in when cooking a big meal. The old kitchen had one on each wall. This is my dream kitchen. It is a joy to come here and cook. Even to wash dishes!
I posted last year my thoughts on planning a kitchen remodel .
I hope you enjoyed my kitchen tour. Is a kitchen remodel in your plans?
