My little office corner is in serious need of wall décor. It has to be special and functional. Every square inch of an office space needs to have a purpose. After all you are working or trying to work there so you should be surrounded with items that are functional, inspirational or both. If it is both you have hit a home run.
I feel I have hit a home run with the wall wood shelf I built. Yes, I built it. I love it. It was fun and easy. My two criteria for a great project. My inspiration came from a Pottery Barn catalog. Of course it did. Gotta love that catalog.
I started out with hobby wood from Home Depot. Hobby boards are my favorite wood to work with. You can buy them in different types of wood such as poplar or pine. I believe mine is poplar. They come in different lengths and widths. I used two boards that are 36 inches long and 5.5 inches wide.

Kreg Jig R3 Jr
2 C clamps or Kreg clamp
Stain of your choice
Start Your Wood Shelf:
Take one board and saw it into four equal pieces. Mine measured 9 inches each.
Sand down the edges.
Starting at the top of the uncut board, measure the spacing for the shelves. Mine measured 9 inches apart.
Now for the fun part. You get to use the Kreg Jig to attach the shelves to the long board. This little tool is awesome. You can get it at any hardware store. It is a little pricey but so worth it.
I used the long side of each shelf to attach to the board. So my shelf is a little wider than the board it is attached to. This just looked better. A little bit more interesting.
Mark the middle of each shelf where you need to drill the holes for the screws to fasten to the main board.
Clamp the Kreg Jig to the shelf.
Clamp the shelf to your work surface. The shelf cannot move while you are drilling the holes for the screws. Now using the drill bit that came with the Kreg Jig, drill two holes into the shelf. If you want extra strength, you could drill four holes. I did that to the top shelf but not the rest. I didn’t think it really needed the extra two screws. Repeat to all four shelves.
Align the shelf with the marking on the main board. Using the drill, screw the shelf into the main board. You want to screw straight into the holes. That way you get the best joint. Don’t drill at an angle, your screws won’t go in all the way. Experience, my friends is a great teacher. Sigh.
Isn’t that pretty? Screw all four shelves onto the main board. Stain. Let dry. Using a D hook, screw it onto the back of your shelving unit. Use a wall anchor to hang your shelf.
Decorate. Don’t put anything too heavy on the shelf. I am not sure how much weight it will hold.
I put a few momentos, books I am loving, my planner and pens on my wood shelf. These items were on my desk top. Now that I have moved them to the shelf, my desk is clutter free again.
It is definitely the little things that make my heart happy.
