Table runners are quick and easy to sew. I have pieced and quilted many table runners for holidays. I needed a new one for everyday. I decided on a pieced star pattern. Quilted stars are one of my favorite patterns. You can turn the triangles in different directions to achieve many designs.
I picked out three coordinating fabrics from my stash. Choosing fabrics is probably the hardest part. Too many decisions. Then I used my GO Fabric Cutter
to cut the star pattern using the die that came with it. This makes cutting fast.
I like to lay my pieces out on the table before I stack them. That way I don’t get confused as to what pieces go together.
Then I take the stacks to my sewing machine and chain piece them together like an assembly line. Just feeding one stack of two after another through the presser foot. I use a 1/4 inch presser foot so I don’t have to think about the seam allowance. This foot sews 1/4 of an inch automatically which is the standard for quilting. This makes the piecing go together quickly.
After cutting the threads connecting my chained pieces, I iron them flat with the seam facing the darker fabric.
I will sew three of these squares which are about 12 x 12 inches. Then I’ll add strips between them and add borders to the sides. That will make a nice size table runner.
Sewing these table runners is very therapeutic. Takes your mind off your day and before you know it one square is finished.
If you are looking for a relaxing project, sewing a quilted table runner is one to try. You don’t need much fabric, I used less than a yard for my stars. Scraps would be good. Just try it.
I should have the runner completed in the next few days. Please come back to see my finished project.
