I am so very fortunate to live within an hour drive to one of the most beautiful national parks in our country. The Great Smoky Mountains are spectacular. I can see them from my home everyday. Being October, the leaves have begun to change although I think they will be at their peak in another week or so.
This past weekend we decided to make a trip to Clingman’s Dome which is the highest point in the Smoky Mountains as well as Tennessee. The observation tower lets you view up to 100 miles away. Amazing.
The hike up to the observation tower is steep. I mean steep. It’s a short hike but due to the angle you are walking it is hard. I had to take several breaks to catch my breath. Need to get myself into better aerobic shape. The effort is definitely worth the fantastic views that greet you.
The observation tower is round as is the concrete spiral you walk around to get to the top. I am in awe of the exquisite beauty of these mountains.
The scent of evergreens as you walk the trail is so refreshing. Just breathing the clean air. The weather was perfect. Sunny without being too hot.
I hope this gives you a sense of just how huge these mountains are. Most of the pictures are from the higher elevations. The last picture is of the trail as we walked down. It was a lovely day to spend with my family. This is something we need to do more often.
